本次讲座将从中国在欧亚大陆中的独特地理位置来解读其早期社会和物质文化的发展。过去的研究者常常将中国早期社会（约公元前5000-前2000年）与美索不达米亚和地中海地区进行比较。本讲将展示黄河、长江流域与西亚的两河流域早期人群在农作物、建筑与物质财富之间的显著差异。跨越高山与草原的遥远距离将这两个截然不同的早期文明远远隔开，迥异的气候也塑造了二者独具特色的农业经济。太平洋季风带来的夏季降水，使得中国形成了大片的水稻种植区，美索不达米亚和地中海地区则得益于冬季降水可以保障小麦和大麦的生长。不同的地质条件对于大型建筑工程也产生了重要的影响，这一点也将在本次讲座中充分阐述。中国发展出了世界上最早的复杂的水管理体系，这是一项非常伟大的工程成就，也是此后的漫长历史中很多地区建造大型基础设施的开端。

The talk will give an overview of China’s geographical position in Eurasia. In the past China’s early societies (c. 5000-2000 BC) have often been compared with those in Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean. The talk will illustrate the very significant differences in crops, buildings and material possessions between the ways in which people lived on the Yellow River and the Yangtze and on the Tigris and Euphrates. An immense distance across high mountains and steppe separated these two very different civilizations. Moreover, the climates of the two regions are distinct—the summer rain of the Pacific Monsoon making possible the success of China’s rice growing areas; on the other hand, winter rain has fostered wheat and barley in Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean.The different geologies also had significant impacts, especially on large architectural projects, which will be fully illustrated. At the same time, China developed some of the earliest complex water management in the world, an impressive engineering achievement. This was the beginning of a long history of creating large-scale infrastructure across many parts of China.

主讲人介绍：

杰西卡‧罗森教授（Professor Dame Jessica Rawson）是英国著名的艺术史学家、考古学家、汉学家，曾任大英博物馆东方古物部主任、牛津大学墨顿学院院长、牛津大学副校长。1990年荣膺英国国家学术院院士，2002年因其在东方研究的突出贡献获英国女王授勋封爵（DBE），2012年获选为美国艺术与科学院外籍院士，2017年获颁弗瑞尔奖章，2022年因其在中国艺术与考古领域的成就获唐奖汉学奖。

罗森教授的学术研究领域主要为中国艺术与考古，内容涵盖了整个古代中国，尤其是从考古和物质文化的角度诠释早期中国与欧亚大陆及其他文明之间的交流互动，是目前中国艺术与考古研究领域最为活跃的西方学者之一。
